People have been Pedicuring & Manicuring their nails for more than 5,000 years. In southern Babylonia, noblemen used solid gold tools to give themselves manicures and pedicures. The use of fingernail polish can be traced back even further. Originating in China in 3000 BC, nail color indicated one’s social status, according to a Ming Dynasty manuscript; royal fingernails were painted black and red. Ancient Egyptians have been manicuring all the way back to 2300 BC. A depiction of early manicures and pedicures was found on a carving from a pharaoh’s tomb, and the Egyptians were known for paying special attention to their feet and legs. The Egyptians also colored their nails, using red to show the highest social class. It is said that Cleopatra’s nails were painted a deep red, whereas Queen Nefertiti went with a flashier ruby shade. In ancient Egypt and Rome, military commanders also painted their nails to match their lips before they went off to battle.  French manicures originated in 18th-century Paris and were popular in the 1920s and 1930s. French Polish the tips of the nails are painted white while the rest of the nails are polished in a pink or a suitable nude shade designed to resemble natural nails.

Since skin is manipulated and is sometimes trimmed, there is a certain risk of spreading infection when tools are used across many people and therefore, sanitation is a serious issue.

The English word manicure is derived from the French usage, meaning "care of the hands", which in turn originates from the Latin words manus, for "hand", and cura, for "care.

Manicures come in a variety of shapes and sizes. You can opt for a basic file and polish, which pretty much does what it says, or you can splash out on a full spa manicure.

What happens when I arrive for my manicure?

The manicure is usually carried out at a specifically designed table within the spa. You will be asked to choose a colour for your polish and remove all your rings, watches and bracelets before the treatment starts.

Top Tip:

Ask if you can pay for your manicure before the treatment to avoid disturbing your beautifully painted nails at the end of the treatment.  Your therapist should also be willing to fish your car keys out of your handbag at the end of the treatment to prevent you ruining her hard work!

Pedicures are not just limited to nails; usually dead skin cells on the bottom of feet are rubbed off. Additionally, leg care below the knee became a common and now expected service included in pedicures.

What happens when I arrive for my pedicure?

Some spas will have a pedicure bar which is a specifically designed area with raised seats and foot sinks, others will set you up in a relaxing treatment room where you usually lie on the bed and can totally relax while the therapist does all the hard work. You will be asked to choose a colour for your nails to be painted and to remove your footwear and to roll up your trouser legs to the knee before the pedicure begins.

Top Tip:

Remember to wear thongs to your treatment so you don’t ruin your therapist’s beautiful work by plunging your painted toe nails into socks and shoes before the paint is completely dry. Your therapist will assist you in putting your thongs on to avoid any dents in the nail paint.
